Wrestling 101
Object: The object of a wrestling match is to gain a fall by pinning an opponent's shoulder blades to the mat for 2 continuous seconds, or to gain a point decision by "out-wrestling" an opponent.
Periods
Length of Match: High School (2min.-2min.-2min.) & College (3min.-2min.-2min.)
1st Period: Starts the match from the standing or in the "neutral" position.
2nd Period: Choice of position determined by "coin toss." The winner may choose top, bottom,neutral, or defer the choice. By deferring the choice, the wrestler will be given the choice at the start of the third period.
3rd Period: Choice of position is given to the wrestler who lost the coin toss before the second period (or if the wrestler defered the choice. The same choices apply (top, bottom, or neutral).
Awarded Points-(Individual Wrestler)
Takedown - 2 points
From a neutral position (both standing with neither wrestler having control)
a wrestler gains control over his opponent down on the mat while the
supporting parts of either wrestler are in bounds.
Escape - 1 point
When a defensive wrestler (bottom) wrestler gains a neutral position and
his opponent has lost control while a least one wrestler is in bounds.
Reversal - 2 points
When the defensive wrestler comes from the bottom position and gains
control of his opponent, either on the mat or in a rear standing position,
while the supporting points of either wrestler are in-bounds.
Near Fall - 2 or 3 points
When near fall criteria is met for 2 seconds, the wrestler scores 2 points ▪
When near fall criteria is met for 5 seconds, the wrestler scores 3 points ▪
▪ Near fall criteria is when any part of both shoulders or scapula of the defensive
wrestler are held for at least 2 seconds within 4 inches of the mat and when
one shoulder or scapula is touching the mat with the other shoulder or scapula
held at an angle of 45 degrees or less.
Penalty - 1 point
A wrestler is awarded point(s) for technical violations of the rules committed
by his opponent. These points are awarded according to infractions including
illegal holds, unnecessary roughness, unsportsmanlike conduct, stalling, and
technical violations. Multiple infractions can result in disqualification.
Team Points (dual meets)
Win by pinfall or forfeit - 6 team points
Win by technical fall (15 point differential) - 5 team points
Win by major decision (8 or more points) - 4 team points
Win by decision - 3 team points
